All 1st year students were provided with a varied and activity based induction programme which included information sessions involving their Year Head, class tutors, PE teacher and Social, Personal & Health Education(SPHE) teachers. Youth Leaders in our school community also mentor our 1st years & meet with them regularly to ensure their ease of transition from primary to secondary school. Each class group has a class prefect, deputy prefect & student council rep elected by their classmates. A Cairdeas (friendship) group of four students is also established in all junior cycle classes, to ensure that all students are cared for within their class setting.

Such is consciousness level of our school community of the challenge that the transition into 1st year can present, that a group of 3rd year students last year completed a CSPE action project on the theme. With the aid of their teacher, Ms. Michelle Gould, they produced an orientation booklet for every first year entitled ‘Oh Dear- First Year!’. The booklet contained all information that a first year ‘fresher’ could ever require. (Pictures attached of booklets).

After school supervised study is offered to all students in our school community but this year we are hoping to pilot a Study Club for 1st years specifically which will aim to provide specific tailored homework support to students in establishing good homework routines & time management. Parents are currently being consulted on interest levels in the provision of this Study Club for 1st year students.

Freshers Clubs are co-ordinated by a team of enthusiastic staff members which will provide a wide range of lunchtime activities for our 1st year students. These will include sporting and non- sporting activities, drama, a games club & a film club. Combine this with the variety of activities provided outside of school hours – football, camogie, basketball, badminton, school gym, hockey to name just the weekly activities on offer – and we can certainly state that there is lots to look forward to for our 1st years & indeed all students at Loreto Secondary School, Fermoy

We look forward to welcoming students from our local primary schools to the hugely successful Annual Primary Schools Blitz in coming days. Mr. Murphy & his team of Transition Year students are busy preparing currently and have. Few surprises organised for the day itself. No doubt the 1st year class of 2015 will be delighted to meet & greet their pals from primary school on the day.
