Loreto Past Pupils Union
Mrs Helen Lyons nee Kearney P.P.U. President 2010-2011
Hello and welcome to the Loreto School Fermoy Past Pupils Union website. My name is Helen Lyons, and in September 2009 I was honoured to be elected President of the PPU.
Like most things relating to the Loreto School Fermoy, the PPU is steeped in history and can trace its roots back as far as 1954 where our first President Mrs Coffey was elected first President. So it a great honour and privilege to wear the chain of office and to have a active part in the communications for the past pupils of all the years to find their classmates, and make their reunion a memorable event.
I first joined the PPU in 2001, when it was my special school reunion (25yrs), and have been a member since, which I have enjoyed and shared with a great committee who have work together in organising the annual school reunion,
We have twelve members on our committee: Kathryn McCarthy Hon Tres, Terry Cleary, Maria Walsh, Aileen Pyne, Eileen Hayden, Siobhan Murray, Fionnuala O’Reilly, Margaret Pyne, Mary Begley, Bernadette Howard, & our Vice Pres Breda Campbell.
Our next Re Union will be on
Saturday 1st October 2011
The Special Class this Year is the Leaving Certificate of 1985-1986

The Annual Reunion of Past Pupils is held in the School/convent and the date is the first Saturday in October. Because of the increase in school numbers, it is only the Special Group, those who have twenty-five years, who are notified by post.
The Reunion is open to all.
The annual subscription covers the cost of the Union.
The Reunion is a great day out when old friendships are renewed. All Past Pupils can savour the Hospitality of the school and the community to which they are so indebted.
Founded in 1954
The first committee was formed in1954 and from a report from the 1955 A.G.M. reveals that the committee was pleased and “felt cautiously optimistic that they had laid the solid foundations of a Union which would grow in strength and numbers,” and would “promote educational, cultural and social welfare of the past and present pupils of Loreto”. Meetings would be held a few times a year, and at the Annual General Meeting in the convent, a reunion of past pupils would be hosted.
In spite of the enormous social, cultural and educational changes that have taken place in the intervening years, the inaugural President and Committee should feel proud that their guarded optimism has been well rewarded.
The Loreto Past Pupils Union is now in its 57th year. The hard work and dedication of the various committees has ensured its continuation. Events such as social dinners and golf competitions, which involved the participation of past pupils, were a good source of income which benefitted the ongoing development of Loreto.
In the recent years the Past Pupils Union Committee members played a part in the Fund Raising project which resulted in the new sports complex and new classrooms. It also helps at various award and scholarships, one of which is the creative writing prize to the different class years at the Annual School Awards evening.
The Loreto Past Pupils Union had its golden Anniversary in 2004, a year after the Convent’s 150th celebrations. Perhaps it will reach its own centenary in 2054!
